Think about it. When you drink in moderation, you feel relaxed and enjoy all that is going on around you. When you drink to excess, you become a different person. You think you are larger than life and can do almost anything. You lose your inhibitions. You embarrass your self. You wind up wondering what happened when you wake up the next morning with a hangover.
How is buying like that? Think about it. It’s always us against our ego and when the reps team up with your ego and goad you toward being a big buyer, you’re in trouble. It’s a bit of a power trip and you aren’t going to let that rep know that you can’t be the biggest buyer in his territory. The more reps you see, the bigger your ego grows. It’s hard to contain yourself. The next morning, you wake up wondering what happened as the goods begin to roll into your store – along with the invoices.
However, if you go to market with a solid buying plan based on anticipated sales and desired turn rates, you buy the right items in the right quantities for delivery at the right times. You are relaxed and enjoy all that is going on around you. No one can sell you beyond your plan and when you wake up in the morning, you’ll know you’ve done the best possible job for your store.
So, don’t drink to excess and if you drink at all, have a designated driver to get you home safely.
And when you buy, don’t buy to excess. Buy with an open to buy plan that will ensure that you will continue to show your customers great items, but more importantly, you will be able to pay all of your bills and take a profit every month.
